We sat down with Taylor, at the bar in Paul Edmonds London Battersea Power Station to talk about her win, past and future at as an award-winning colourist!…

So Taylorwhat brought you to Paul Edmonds London?

I was a weekend girl in a salon based in east London while I was at school, unfortunately, the salon had shut down but I knew then that I wanted to work in a hair salon full time. It was coming up to me leaving school after my GCSE’s so I told my teacher I wanted hairdressing to be my career and the industry I wanted to enter. Luckily my Teacher was an actual client of Paul’s and at the time he was looking for apprentices from different areas of London to experience a Knightsbridge salon…everything happens for a reason, I thought to myself! I had an interview and a week and a half later I was working full time at Paul Edmonds London…I didn’t even have my final 6 weeks summer holiday because I wanted to start straight away, I was so excited! I loved being a 16-year-old who had her own money and career and everything started since then! Check out the photo on the right of Taylor aged 16 with Paul Edmonds during her apprenticeship.

When did you know that you wanted to be a colourist?

I started my apprenticeship at Paul Edmonds London in 2014 and as I was finishing up college, I was liking the idea of working with colour. Colour was something I was always good at and I was always signed off quicker on my colour than I was at cutting so I naturally fell into starting my journey as a colourist.

While starting at Paul Edmonds London I met Jack Howard and he completely inspired me! From the offset, he was my role model and I knew I was in safe hands.

Is this your first year entering the L’Oreal Colour Trophy?

I did enter last year but I didn’t make it through the first round! So I was super shocked to make the semi-finals not alone win!

Tell us about your Colour Trophy experience and the stages that you had to go through…

Colour Trophy final

Stage 1.The first round was the photo competition where we had to colour and style our model, which we had to find ourselves! It was VERY hard to find someone who would be up for having yellow hair, especially as they needed virgin locks (no previous colour at all!). Matilda and I styled our model including outfit to have the best photo we possibly could. We are so lucky to have such an amazing salon, that it all took place in Paul Edmonds London, Knightsbridge! Check out Taylor and Matilda’s photo entry on the left!

Stage 2. After making it through the photo competition, five models were selected from each region to attend the semi-finals, held at the Connaught, London. The competition including Taylor producing a mood board and presenting her ideas to the panel of judges, followed by an interview. That evening the models walked the catwalk and the winner from each region was announced. The Paul Edmonds team came to support and it was so nice to see the team supporting me throughout the experience! When the winner was announced  I didn’t know it would be by the model’s number so I had no idea that I had won! I really didn’t expect it because the competition was SO strong and the colours were amazing. After the semi’s I celebrated in the pub with my model…where I actually found her!

Stage 3. The Grand Final held in Battersea Evolution was the final stage of the competition. The location was super close to Paul Edmonds London Battersea Power Station salon, we were very lucky as others had traveled from all over the UK but we were just around the corner. The competition was across the whole day where all 8 from each region prepped and styled their models while the judges asked questions, were feeling the hair and inspecting our work. Matilda was by my side the whole day, styling my yellow look to perfection! The Paul Edmonds team came once again to support and I loved seeing them in the audience as I actually had to walk the catwalk! It was amazing!

How nervous were you on the night?

I was a bit, especially as I didn’t realise I was having to walk on stage! My model gave me a quick catwalk lesson but I definitely walked a lot further than I thought I would!  All I kept thinking was what shall I do, if I win or if I don’t… then it was announced!

Where did the yellow inspiration come from?

I noticed that this season a lot of home interiors, kitchen appliances, catwalks and celebs featured the colour yellow…it’s very now. Last year it was the same with grey so this year I thought a bit of colour was definitely needed. I describe yellow as a happy colour…just like me!

Can clients come and see you in the salon?

Yes of course! I work both in Paul Edmonds London Knightsbridge and Battersea Power Station. I love a good hair colour transformation and making my clients happy. To request an appointment with Taylor…click here.

What can we expect from you in the future?

As part of my L’Oreal Colour Trophy prize win, I’m off to Paris for a photoshoot with my model! I can’t wait, it will be such an amazing experience! I am so so grateful. I have also won a year’s training with L’Oreal so I plan on adding to my skills set and growing my career. I love being at Paul Edmonds London so you can definitely still find me there!

Top tips by Taylor

What are the best products for locking in colour?

Definitely Shu Uemura Colour Lustre Shampoo, it’s sulphate free, meaning that it will not strip your colour, making it last longer! A really good conditioner a recommend is Urban Moisture, it’s perfect for revitalising city exposed hair.

How can you keep your hair in excellent condition when you have colour?

Book regular hair treatments, I recommend a Collagen to add moisture and keep hair looking fresh and cared for.

For results that can’t wait, book the Shu Uemura Instant Replenisher treatment, applied at the backwash, you can add this treatment to your regular hair appointment for £20.

Have your colour done every 4-6 weeks depending on your hair growth to keep it looking fresh and new. Click here to request a colour appointment with Taylor at both Paul Edmonds London Knightsbridge and Battersea Power Station.
