Is your summer holiday just around the corner? If so, now is the time to get your hair, skin and nails in perfect condition for your big trip away.
Clients often ask our hair care experts for advice on how to look their best on the beach, in the bar and out and about in the sun. Here are our top tips for ensuring that your locks stay healthy, glossy and protected from your first swim in the sea to your last evening cocktail.
1. Protect, protect, protect
You wouldn’t dream of heading out into the sun without applying a high factor SPF as part of your holiday skincare regime – and the same should go for your hair.
UVA and UVB rays can damage the cuticle (the outer covering of each hair fibre), so prolonged sun exposure can result in dryness, breakage, split ends and discolouration.
To combat these effects, apply a product designed to protect your hair from UV light before you step outside. The Kérastase Soleil range of luxury hair care products includes a leave-in conditioning cream and an oil spray that protects and nourishes hair all day long.
The simplest way to prevent sun damage to your hair (and your skin!) is to wear a big, wide-brimmed hat and seek shade during the hottest part of the day. Tying your hair up will also stop the mid-lengths and ends from drying out.
2. Cleanse gently every day
Whilst you may not wash your hair every day at home, you should do so on holiday.
Salt and chlorine can cause hair to dull and discolour, so rinse it in freshwater as soon as you leave the pool or the sea. In the evening, shampoo and condition with hair care products designed for use after sun exposure.
Try Kérastase Soleil Bain Après-Soleil to gently remove salt, sand and chlorine residues. Its gel formulation is cooling and hydrating, leaving hair with a light, summery scent of jasmine and tuberose that will linger into the evening.
3. Turn down the heat
If your hair is exposed to the sun’s rays all day long, it’s a good idea to minimise blow-drying and the use of heated styling tools in the evening. Summer holidays allow for a more natural, relaxed look, so try leaving your hair to air-dry whenever possible.
4. Treat yourself to a hair masque
Every few days, invest some time in treating your hair to some extra TLC. A hair masque is easy to apply and will help your hair recover from the environmental assault of sun, sea and sand.
The Kérastase Soleil Masque Après-Soleil is a luxury haircare treatment that is easy to apply at home or in your hotel room. Smooth it over the lengths and ends of cleansed, wet hair, massage it through and leave it for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. You’ll be left with soft, radiant hair that is nourished, hydrated and ready for the next day’s sun-soaked adventure.
5. Be careful with colour
Should you colour your hair before a holiday? Of course, you should! You don’t want to go away with roots coming through.
It’s important to get advice from your stylist or colourist before you go. They will probably advise against a major colour change (for example, going from blonde to dark), as it will tend to fade more quickly in the sun. Copper tones fade fastest, as the colour molecules are smaller, so it might be worth waiting until you’re home before adding warmth.
If your hair tends to lighten and your skin darkens on holiday, this could inspire a longer-term colour change. Book an appointment with your colourist when you get back to discuss a transition from summer colour to autumn, as the light changes and we head back into the cooler months.
