Paul Edmonds has always loved modern art, with a particular passion for Rothko, Richter and Quinn. So we were delighted to attend the opening party for the Bear Witness Auction Exhibition at Sotheby’s in Bond Street. It was a decidedly glamorous affair and it was fun to meet up with some of our clients that we usually see in Knightsbridge very much at home with their contemporaries in the young international art collecting glitterati.
We loved this extraordinary exhibition of modern art and curious contemporary artefacts. This collection was the vision of one man – who remains anonymous. His seemingly eclectic magpie approach to collecting was actually built around twin obsessions – bears and skulls. The result is a very personal, brave and energised compilation of the great, the glamorous and the gory artists of our time.
The sale exceeded all expectations taking over £36 million but what was really impressive was how it sparked the public imagination. The exhibition ran for just 6 days this March and pulled in over 7600 visitors.
Our city’s love of modern art is what we #BearWitness to.
