In our skin series, we have previously explained the benefits of peels and the differences between the various AHAs and BHAs.There are lots of great post procedure and skin maintenance products available and in particular Glycolic acid has recently been included in some great product launches at Paul Edmonds London.
What is Glycolic Acid? And Why Have It?
Glycolic Acid is one of the families of many Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), and can be used to help exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells. Regular exfoliation helps to promote increased cellular turnover, which over time can help combat the signs of ageing (such as reducing the appearance of wrinkles, dullness, and uneven skin texture). As we age, our cell turnover becomes slower, leaving dehydrated cells on the surface of the skin. Glycolic acid helps to dissolve the bonds that bind surface dead cells to the skin gently removing them.
Glycolic acid comes in varying strengths, between 4 to 10% and can be used once or twice daily -but this depends on the PH level of the acid. The lower the PH, the more enhanced the detoxification and turnover of the cells. Strengths above the 10% are better suited to in-clinic procedures that should be administered by an aesthetician that will work to precondition and prepare the skin as well as provide the correct post-procedure care. Otherwise Glycolic acid is available as a topical night renewal product by both SkinCeuticals and Dr Zo at Paul Edmonds London.
What do the topical night renewal creams do? How do they work?
As Glycolic acid is a great exfoliator, manufacturers now are able to combine the effective exfoliating
action with other acids to provide further benefits of reduced pigmentation, brightness and
strengthening the skin’s barrier from external aggressors. Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 overnight renewal cream, combines the benefits of Glycolic acid with Phytic Acid which adds clarity and brightness to the skin, another added advantage is that it contains a triple action soothing complex which fortifies the skin barrier. We find that after cleansing your skin you should apply a pea size amount rubbed all over your face, the texture is quite runny so it easily spreads over the face and is quickly absorbed, makes sure you leave it 15 to 30mins to absorb fully before you go to sleep. Wake up and look refreshed!
Dr Zo Glycogen Exfoliation Accelerator 10%, is a powerful Glycolic and Lactic acid renewal cream.
Again the glycolic and lactic acids, reduce and prevent skin damage as it provides potent skin surface renewal. The anti-redness and antioxidant properties minimise the appearance of skin irritation and prevents skin damage in the future. This treatment is ideal for men too, the combination of glycolic and lactic acid, helps to reduce ingrowing hair caused by shaving, you get the most amazing ease of shaving and skin texture. Whether you go for Skinceuticals or Dr Zo you can use this skin resurfacing wonder product 2 or 3 times a week as part of your nighttime skin regime.
Like all resurfacing treatments, this is time to invest in some other addition maintenance products to give your skin added enhancement. As you are getting cell turnover and exposing new skin with your glycolic overnight creams, you should use an antioxidant serum throughout the day such as CE Ferulic or Phloretin CF to protect you from oxidation that is caused when your skin is exposed to the environment, double up and build your own skins Hyaluronic acid by using HA intensifier after your Antioxidant serum (apply HA Intensifier about 6 drops onto the palm of your hand and work onto your face and neck), always finish off a great SPF, we recommend Heliocare SPFs and the latest 360 gel oil free dry touch SPF 50 (it’s a broad spectrum UV A + B as well as Infrared protection) which is perfect for the hot summer and wont rub off or cause blocked pores ….if you sweat.
