There is a particular kind of disappointment reserved for a blow-dry that looked immaculate indoors and changed personality the moment it met the weather. If humidity, rain or simply stepping outside can undo your work, the promise of smoother hair for longer is understandably appealing.
Enter Keratin Alpha Sleek, the new four-product home programme from L’Oréal Professionnel. It sits somewhere between your usual anti-frizz care and a professional smoothing service: more involved than applying a mask and easier to try without committing to a longer-lasting salon result, but considerably more demanding to maintain at home.
The name invites the obvious questions. Is it actually a keratin treatment? Will it straighten the hair? And, crucially, how much work do you still have to do yourself? We asked Paul Edmonds for the unvarnished version.
ALPHA SLEEK AT A GLANCE

Alpha Sleek is a progressive, heat-activated at-home smoothing programme. It is not permanent straightening, a Brazilian blow-dry or a salon keratin treatment, and it still asks something of you, precise application, the full processing time and heat styling at home.
SO, WHAT DOES ALPHA SLEEK ACTUALLY DO?
The aim is smoother, softer hair with less visible frizz and better control of unwanted volume. The results build rather than appear all at once: the Smooth Transformer is used weekly — or roughly every three washes — with performance peaking after the fourth application.
In consumer and instrumental testing, the prescribed programme delivered up to two weeks of frizz control. After four uses of the Shampoo, Smooth Transformer and Serum, results included up to five times smoother hair, two times less frizz and styling in half the time.1
These are full-programme results rather than a promise attached to every individual product. They also do not mean that the hair becomes permanently straighter or that styling is no longer necessary.
FIRST: DOES KERATIN ALPHA SLEEK CONTAIN KERATIN?
No. Despite the name, there is no keratin in any of the four formulas.
Keratin is the structural protein naturally present in hair. Rather than adding an animal-derived keratin ingredient, the technology has been developed to work with the alpha-keratin structure already inside the fibre.
The distinction is simpler than the terminology makes it sound. This is not about replenishing “missing keratin” or filling the hair with additional protein. The Smooth Transformer uses an amino-acid-based formula, including cysteine, designed to help the hair respond to styling with a smoother, more controlled finish. The remaining products cleanse, condition and help support that finish.
In practical terms, it is more than a conventional conditioning mask, but it is not a traditional keratin treatment or a semi-permanent salon service.
“Despite the name, this is not a traditional keratin treatment and it is not adding new keratin to the hair. It works with the alpha-keratin structure already there. For the customer, it is better understood as a progressive at-home smoothing programme.” — Paul Edmonds
WHAT ALPHA SLEEK DOES NOT DO

Alpha Sleek is not permanent straightening. It is not a Brazilian blow-dry, and it is not equivalent to a professionally applied semi-permanent smoothing service.
The customer still carries out the treatment at home. The Smooth Transformer must be applied in the correct quantity, left to process for up to 15 minutes, rinsed and followed with the heat-activated Mirror Sleek Serum. The hair then needs to be blow-dried; straightening irons can be used for a longer-lasting finish.
In other words, Alpha Sleek may make the finished hair smoother and quicker to style, but it does not remove the styling step.
“You still have to do the work: apply the treatment properly, allow it to process and finish the hair with heat. What makes it interesting is that it gives someone a relatively low-commitment way to discover whether they enjoy a smoother, more controlled finish.” — Paul Edmonds
WHO IS IT FOR?
The range is suitable for all hair types, but that does not automatically make it the right choice for everyone. The more useful question is what you want your hair to look like — and how much time you are prepared to spend achieving it.
Alpha Sleek may suit you if:
- Frizz or unwanted volume makes your usual styling less predictable.
- You regularly blow-dry or straighten your hair and want a smoother finish.
- You want to explore smoothing without immediately committing to a salon service.
- You are comfortable following a multi-step routine and using heat to activate the result.
- You want flexibility: the effect is progressive and temporary rather than a long-term structural change.
It may not be the right starting point if:
- You want to preserve all of your natural volume or curl pattern.
- You prefer an air-dried or heat-free routine.
- Your priority is curl definition rather than a sleeker finish.
- You expect wash-and-go straightness.
- Your hair has undergone a straightening treatment. The Smooth Transformer is not recommended in this instance because of a potential risk of surface dryness; choose the Shampoo, Mask and Serum instead.
If your hair is fragile, heavily bleached or highly sensitised, professional advice is sensible before introducing an intensive smoothing programme or increasing heat styling.
HOW TO USE THE ALPHA SLEEK ROUTINE
The Smooth Transformer and Hair Mask both come after shampoo, but they are not used together. The Transformer is the progressive treatment applied once a week; the Mask takes its place on the wash days in between, providing conditioning and smoothness without repeating the treatment step.
STEP ONE: CLEANSE
Apply the Keratin Alpha Sleek Shampoo evenly to wet hair, work into a lather and rinse thoroughly. Its sulphate-free cleansing base is supported by conditioning agents, helping to prepare the hair for either the weekly Smooth Transformer or the Hair Mask.
STEP TWO: CHOOSE THE TREATMENT FOR THAT WASH DAY
Once a week: Smooth Transformer
Shake the bottle, divide the hair into two sections and apply 30–50g through the lengths and ends, adjusting the amount for the hair’s length and thickness. Avoid the scalp. Leave for 10–15 minutes, but no longer, then rinse thoroughly.
Use it once weekly or every three washes for four applications. Performance peaks at four uses. If you wish to continue afterwards, reduce the frequency and alternate it with the Mask; professional guidance is recommended for extended use.
On other wash days: Hair Mask
Apply the Hair Mask evenly through the lengths and ends, leave for five minutes and rinse. It conditions and smooths the hair without repeating the more intensive Transformer step.
There is no need to follow the Smooth Transformer with the Mask. Choose one treatment after shampooing: the Transformer for the designated weekly application, or the Mask on the wash days in between.
STEP THREE: APPLY MIRROR SLEEK SERUM
On washed, towel-dried hair, spray the Mirror Sleek Serum into your hands and distribute it evenly through the lengths and ends:
- Two to four sprays for fine-to-medium hair.
- Six to eight sprays for thicker hair.
Do not rinse.
STEP FOUR: ACTIVATE WITH HEAT
The Serum is heat-activated, so blow-drying is part of the routine rather than an optional extra. Straightening can prolong the smooth finish. Heat protection extends up to 230°C, although the right temperature should always reflect the hair’s condition and texture rather than simply using the maximum available heat.
WHICH ROUTINE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
The deciding factor is not simply how frizzy your hair is. It is how much of your current routine you are prepared to change — and whether you want a focused experiment or an ongoing smoothing regime.
YOU WANT TO TRY A SMOOTHER FINISH WITHOUT REPLACING YOUR ENTIRE ROUTINE
Choose the Alpha Sleek Smoothing Programme
Shampoo + Smooth Transformer + Mirror Sleek Serum
This is the more focused route for someone curious about smoothing but not ready to abandon every product already in the bathroom. Use the three-step programme for the designated weekly treatment: cleanse, apply the Smooth Transformer, then finish with the heat-activated Serum before blow-drying.
Follow it for four weekly applications to experience the progressive result. On the wash days in between, you can continue with your usual routine. It is the better choice if you want to discover whether reduced frizz and volume suit you before committing to a new ongoing regime — or to a longer-lasting salon treatment.
FRIZZ IS AN ONGOING CONCERN AND YOU ARE READY TO CHANGE YOUR FULL REGIME
Choose the Complete Alpha Sleek Routine
Shampoo + Smooth Transformer + Hair Mask + Mirror Sleek Serum
This is for someone prepared to replace their existing wash-and-care routine with the complete Alpha Sleek system. Use the Smooth Transformer for the designated weekly treatment, then use the Mask in its place on the wash days between applications. The Serum completes every Alpha Sleek wash before heat styling.
It asks for more consistency, but it also removes the guesswork: every stage of the routine is designed around the same aim of smoother, softer and more controlled hair. Choose it if ongoing upkeep is already part of the way you care for your hair and frizz or unwanted volume is a recurring concern rather than an occasional frustration.
START WITH AN INDIVIDUAL PRODUCT
The Shampoo and Hair Mask provide a more familiar wash-and-care entry point. The silicone-based, heat-activated Serum supports smoothness, humidity control and heat protection within a styling routine. The Smooth Transformer is the defining product for someone specifically committed to trying the progressive programme.
AT-HOME SMOOTHING OR A SALON TREATMENT?
Alpha Sleek occupies the space between conventional anti-frizz homecare and a professionally applied smoothing service.
It offers control and flexibility: you can try a smoother finish without committing to a longer-lasting salon result. The trade-off is ongoing effort. You must repeat the treatment, observe the processing time and carry out the blow-drying or straightening yourself.
A professional smoothing treatment is a different proposition. The hair is assessed, the formula and processing are tailored, and the objective is a longer-lasting improvement in manageability with less work required at home.
“Think of Alpha Sleek as a stepping stone. If you like the smoother finish but want greater longevity and less home effort, that is when it makes sense to discuss a professional smoothing treatment with your stylist.” — Paul Edmonds
For clients seeking a longer-lasting result with less repeated work at home, Paul Edmonds London offers two professionally applied routes at Battersea Power Station. Signature Smooth is the more established, longer-term option. The Botox Treatment for Hair is a demi-permanent smoothing and de-frizz service designed to soften frizz, preserve natural movement and make styling easier for approximately four to six weeks.
Both begin with a consultation. This is particularly important if you use permanent tint for grey coverage, as the Botox Treatment for Hair can shift colour lighter or warmer; the potential lift tends to become more noticeable as the proportion of grey hair increases.
PAUL'S VERDICT

Alpha Sleek is most convincing when understood for what it is: a progressive, heat-activated home programme for someone who wants greater control over frizz, smoothness and unwanted volume without immediately committing to a salon treatment.
Its short-term nature is also part of its appeal. It offers room to experiment, allowing the customer to discover whether they like their hair smoother and less voluminous before deciding whether a longer-lasting professional service fits their lifestyle. What it does not offer is low-maintenance hair: the result depends on repeating the programme and styling the hair correctly at home.
The key is expectation. Alpha Sleek does not provide months of effortless manageability, and it will not perform without correct application and heat styling. For the customer willing to follow the routine, however, it provides an accessible first step into more considered smoothing.
KERATIN ALPHA SLEEK: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Keratin Alpha Sleek a keratin treatment?
Not in the traditional sense. None of the four UK formulas contains keratin. The technology is designed to work with the hair’s existing alpha-keratin structure rather than adding a keratin ingredient.
Does Alpha Sleek permanently straighten the hair?
No. It is a temporary, progressive at-home smoothing programme. It is designed to reduce frizz and unwanted volume rather than permanently alter the hair’s structure.
How long do the results last?
The prescribed programme delivered up to two weeks of frizz control in consumer testing.1 Individual results will still depend on the hair, correct application, styling method and environment.
Do I need all four Alpha Sleek products?
Not necessarily. For a focused four-week trial, the Shampoo, Smooth Transformer and Mirror Sleek Serum form the core Smoothing Programme used on the designated weekly treatment day. Add the Hair Mask if you want Alpha Sleek to replace your wider wash-and-care routine, using it on the wash days between Transformer applications.
Do I have to stop using my current hair products?
No. If you choose the three-product Smoothing Programme, you can continue with your usual regime on the wash days between weekly applications. The Complete Alpha Sleek Routine is for someone ready to replace that existing regime with one coordinated system.
What is the difference between the Smooth Transformer and Hair Mask?
The Smooth Transformer is the progressive treatment used once a week or approximately every three washes. The Hair Mask is the conditioning alternative for the wash days in between. They occupy the same step after shampooing, so you choose one rather than using both together.
Do I need to use heat?
Yes, for the intended result. Mirror Sleek Serum is heat-activated. Blow-dry after application; straightening can prolong the finish.
How often should I use Smooth Transformer?
Use it once weekly, or approximately every three washes, for four applications. Performance peaks after four uses. Reduce the frequency afterwards and seek professional guidance if you intend to continue using it over an extended period.
What should I do after the first four applications?
You can reduce the frequency of the Smooth Transformer and use it as an occasional top-up, alternating with the Hair Mask. If you liked the smoother result but want greater longevity with less repeated work at home, this is also a natural point to consider a professional smoothing consultation.
Can I leave Smooth Transformer on for longer?
No. Leave it for 10–15 minutes. There is no additional benefit after 15 minutes, so longer is not better.
Can I use Alpha Sleek on colour-treated hair?
Yes, the Smooth Transformer is suitable for colour-treated hair. If the hair is highly sensitised or heavily bleached, seek professional guidance before using an intensive smoothing programme or increasing heat styling.
Can I use it after a straightening treatment?
The Smooth Transformer is not recommended on hair that has undergone a straightening treatment because of a potential risk of surface dryness. Use the Shampoo, Hair Mask and Serum instead.
Is Alpha Sleek suitable for curly hair?
It is suitable for all hair types, but suitability also depends on the result you want. If preserving curl definition and natural volume is your priority, a dedicated curl routine may be more appropriate.
Is Alpha Sleek the same as a professional smoothing treatment?
No. Alpha Sleek is applied at home and requires the customer to repeat the treatment and activate the finish with heat. Signature Smooth and the Botox Treatment for Hair are professionally assessed salon services for customers seeking a more tailored, longer-lasting result with less repeated work at home.
1 Consumer test on 68 participants using the programme once weekly for four weeks, followed by a 15-day break observation. Smoothness, frizz and styling-time results were measured through instrumental testing after four uses of the Shampoo, Smooth Transformer and Serum routine.
