Modern graduated bobs: The versatile style that grows out beautifully

The angled bob is back with a cool, contemporary feel.

If the term ‘graduated bob’ conjures visions of Victoria Beckham in the early noughties with her choppy, platinum blonde ‘pob’ (posh bob) haircut, you might be alarmed to hear that angled crops are back in the spotlight. But fear not, the 2026 version of the classic cut is chic, subtle and incredibly wearable.

“The 2000's Victoria Beckham look was a traditional graduated bob – really short at the back of the head and long at the front,” says Zoe Rodgers, artistic director at Paul Edmonds London. “You don't really see that very often now. Clients want a longer bob that’s very easy to maintain and that grows out easily.”

The softly graduated cut, which works on a diverse range of hair types and lengths, has been embraced by many a celebrity recently, from pop stars Raye and Rita Ora to actresses Lily Collins, Halle Berry and Michelle Yeoh. Victoria Beckham has even revived the pob with a shoulder-skimming wavy look.

Why now? “I think it's tied to the general direction of trends towards hair that is low-maintenance, easy to grow out and versatile,” says director Tasha, giving the recent example of a client who went from very long hair to a layered graduated bob. “She messaged me to say she absolutely loved her hair because she can wear it in so many ways, like parted on either side, tucked behind her ear or worn loose, and it’s a completely different look every time.”

Wondering if you should try this versatile style? Here, Zoe and Tasha explain everything you need to know about the modern graduated bob…

WHAT IS A MODERN GRADUATED BOB?

Unlike previous iterations, which were much shorter at the back and long at the front, the modern graduated bob is layered but only slightly angled, and comes in a variety of lengths, finishing anywhere from jawline to shoulder.

“You can graduate it by taking weight from the top or bottom layers,” Tasha says. “It could be slightly rounded or tucked, or it could be just a tiny inch-deep graduation.”

A softly layered bob could be parted in the middle or on the side, Zoe says. “And you can put fringe in, for example, a soft fringe or a curtain bang. It doesn't have to be one length.”

The contemporary graduated bob also suits a wide variety of hair textures, she continues. “It can go from straight to wavy to very curly. I really like it on curly hair – it looks a little bit more sculptured – but it might be difficult to achieve the right shape on tightly coiled hair.”

WHO SUITS A MODERN GRADUATED BOB?

WHO SUITS A MODERN GRADUATED BOB?

Because there are so many variations of a modern graduated bob, it’s easy for hairdressers to personalise and find a style to suit their client.

“A soft graduation accentuates your cheekbones,” says Zoe. “It's great for someone with a heavier jawline, as it'll soften the squareness, whereas a traditional one-length bob could accentuate it. It's up to the stylist to have a look at the client’s face shape and see what would suit them best.”

She’s a big fan of modern graduated bobs on grey hair. “Grey hair is often multicoloured, so it looks really nice if you've got the whiter hair at the front and the darker grey hair at the back. Especially when you're cutting it through with layers and can see more of the texture.”

The softly layered cut is also ideal for anyone with long hair who’s ready to try a shorter style, Zoe adds. “A lot of people, when they go from long hair to short, they don't necessarily want a huge change, so they'll have a long bob first, then when they're feeling a bit braver, they might go shorter because they see the celebrities looking fab with shorter hair.”

HOW OFTEN DOES A MODERN GRADUATED BOB NEED TO BE TRIMMED?

“With traditional graduated bobs, you had to get them trimmed very regularly because they were so heavily layered and you’d end up with a ‘fringe’ bit at the back,” Zoe says. “They were very hard to grow out, whereas these modern bobs are very easy to grow out.”

As well as being easy to style and low-maintainance, a softly sloped bob keeps the same angle as it grows, so your jaw-skimming bob can evolve seamlessly into a clavicle cut and eventually a mid-length style.

If you want to maintain your original bob length, Zoe says, “It’s best to get a trim every six weeks so that you don’t lose that sharpness, but if it's a softer texture, you can get away with leaving it a little bit longer.”

Tasha also recommends regular trims to keep your hair looking fresh and polished. “It's like with a manicure – it looks nicer when it's perfectly done.”

HOW SHOULD YOU STYLE A MODERN GRADUATED BOB?

Because a modern graduated bob can be done on most hair types, this will guide your choice of styling products, Zoe says. “If you've got straight hair, you've got to use the right smoothing products, or if you want a bit more volume, you need volumising products.” For a glossy graduated bob, she advises blow drying with a large brush, while for curly or wavy textures, you should “use a diffuser to create a fuller shape and preserve the natural wave.”

What products from the Paul Edmonds London line-up does she recommend? “Shu Uemura Tsuki Shape is one of my favourite mousses, or I might go for the Awa Volume for a more bouncy look. From Oribe, you could combine the Maximista Thickening Spray with Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream so you're getting smoothness and volume.”

Tasha is a big fan of Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, applied before blow drying. “It’s super light, it's not greasy at all, and it works on the layers.” For a beachy wave bob, she adds, “I’m also absolutely in love with Oway Sea Salt Spray. It's one of the best products out there.”

To refresh a second-day bob, Zoe recommends spritzing with Sam McKnight Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist. “With a modern bob, you can have it smoother one day, and then the next day you could tong it slightly to create a bit more movement.”
