Is tap water ruining your colour? Our experts recommend this new heavy metal detox...

Here's a scary fact: the heavy metals in your local water supply can hurt your coloured hair. They can even affect the results you get from in-salon colour services. Luckily, L'Oréal Professionnel has come to the rescue!

Metal Detox is a new line of in-salon protocols and at-home care products from L'Oréal Professionnel, designed to detox heavy metals from your hair. Not only will the colour be more vibrant and true, but your hair will feel stronger, look shinier, and stay healthier.

How do heavy metals harm your hair?

There's a 50/50 chance you have excess levels of heavy metal in your hair right now. The experts at L'Oréal found a link between excess metals, hair porosity, and the quality of local water. In London, almost two-thirds of people (62%) have excess levels of metal in their hair.

Expert research has found that heavy metals like copper can stick to the strands of your hair and even penetrate the core of your hair shaft. Copper molecules are incredibly small, making them difficult to shift or neutralise.

Excess metal in your hair isn't a problem for your health, but it's a real no-no if you want to colour or lighten your look. Research by L'Oréal found that excess copper molecules within the hair can block the oxidants inside your colour treatment. As a result, coloured or lightened hair is more prone to breakage and unpredictable colour results. It's not great when you have a specific vision for your balayage hair colour!

The science behind L'Oréal Professionnel's Metal Detox range

Scientific research for the range started seven years ago, in collaboration with the Ioannina University in Greece. The experts at L'Oréal analysed 2,000 hair strands from around the world and identified a link between the quality of colour and health of the strand with the levels of metal within them.

Using sophisticated technology, L'Oréal developed a formula enriched with 10% Glicoamine — the perfect molecule for penetrating the hair fibre deeply to neutralise copper. The technology is so sophisticated that nine different patents protect it.

"Thanks to our collaboration with the Ioannina University, we identified a perfect molecule: Glicoamine. It is the only active agent small enough to trap and neutralise metal inside the fibre. Fibre integrity is preserved and the oxidant gets to fully do its job," says Charlotte Feltin, Head of L'Oréal Haircare Laboratories.

The formulas in the Metal Detox range reduce breakage by up to 87% and give a 100% optimised colour result. It's the ultimate pre-colour treatment to deeply cleanse your hair of hidden pollutants and keep it clean long-term.

How to get your heavy metal detox at home and in-salon

You can request the treatment as part of your hair colour service with us and continue the care at home.

3 Step In-salon metal detox treatment

You can request the Metal Detox protocol as part of your next colour service for an additional £15. It's a must if you want optimum colour results and super strong hair!

  1. Professional Pre-treatment Spray
We'll apply this pre-treatment before we start your colour, balayage or lightening service. It encloses the copper molecule, so it doesn't react during the oxidative stage of hair colouring. As a result, the colour will apply more evenly, last longer, and look shinier.
  2. Cleansing Cream Shampoo
After we've finished your colour service, we'll cleanse your hair using this cream shampoo. The rich cream transforms into a concentrated foam that removes the coated copper particles from your hair.
  3. Anti-Deposit Protector Mask
The final step in the treatment is a professional mask that prevents new particles of heavy metal from coming back. It also makes your finished style look and feel utterly incredible.

Continue the care: 2-step protocol at home

Once your hair has been coloured and pampered, we recommend continuing the hair detox treatment at home. After all, UK water was ranked third for heavy metal levels out of the 18 countries assessed by L'Oréal. It's vital to continue the salon protocol at home if you want to maintain the condition, purity, and colour integrity of your tresses.

The Metal Detox home care routine provides essential hair colour protection and gives up to 93% colour preservation against UV exposure. In other words, it'll keep that freshly coloured or lightened look for longer!

Step 1: Cleansing Cream Shampoo

Start your home care routine with this sumptuous (sulphate-free!) hair detox shampoo. It's a light textured gel that transforms into a lush foam as it removes the heavy metal particles from the outside of your hair.

This is a hardworking shampoo, but that doesn't mean you won't get a sensorial experience. Metal Detox Cleansing Cream Shampoo has an addictive scent with top notes of citrus and a distinctive, musky wood heart.

Step 2: Anti-Deposit Protector Mask

Once you've stripped your hair of harmful heavy metal particles, it's time to stop them from coming back. Apply the Anti-Deposit Protector Mask to your hair and feel confident that your colour is protected for longer.
