The spa-inspired scalp treatment that will transform your hair health
Because you can’t have strong, glossy locks without a healthy scalp.
The latest addition to our extensive salon treatment menu, the seven-step Scalp Health Ritual Spa Treatment is designed to identify and treat common scalp problems.
It’s perfect for anyone who has noticed changes to their scalp or hair health recently and wants to get to the root of the problem.
“If your scalp's feeling itchy or sore, if there’s any redness, especially along the hairline, any flakes or dandruff, these could be caused by a scalp issue,” says Matilda Collins, senior director at Paul Edmonds London.
“If you've started to notice hair loss or perhaps your scalp's a bit smellier than usual, that could be a sign that there's a bacterial infection. This treatment is for anyone looking to target a specific problem or boost their general scalp health and, therefore, their internal hair growth.”
That’s because “all healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp,” so treating the skin and hair follicles creates the optimal condition for emerging strands.
The only instance in which it wouldn’t be possible to perform the ritual is in the case of severe psoriasis, Matilda says: “If they currently have a flare-up with open wounds sores on the scalp, it’s best to wait until the skin has calmed down.”
Using a cutting-edge trichocam, your stylist will examine your scalp closely and follow a spa-inspired protocol that includes cleansing, steaming and treating with gentle but effective products.
In addition to the intensive Scalp Health Ritual Spa Treatment, we have also introduced the Scalp Ritual Relaxing Spa Treatment.
“The second option is all about pampering,” Paul Edmonds explains. “It’s a luxuriating ritual that helps to soften and strengthen the hair, whereas the health treatment is about solving scalp problems.”
Whichever treatment you choose, the process will be tailored to your individual scalp and hair needs and you’ll get to enjoy 90 minutes of uninterrupted ‘me’ time in the salon.
Here, Paul and Matilda give us a step-by-step breakdown of the brilliant new scalp-soothing rituals…
THE SCALP HEALTH RITUAL SPA TREATMENT
STEP 1: Diagnose

To begin the treatment, which lasts around 90 minutes to two hours, your stylist will take a close look at your scalp with a high-tech tricho camera and ask you about any concerns you might have to determine if there’s a specific issue that needs addressing
“We connect the camera to an iPad and examine the scalp, mainly looking problem areas such as behind the ear, the nape of the neck and along the hairline, plus anywhere the client has noticed specific irritation,” Matilda explains.
“We also look at things like the hair density and check for new hair growth or if there are any areas where the hair's not growing.”
Your stylist will capture photos with the camera to save on your file, enabling them to track your progress over time and decide how to tailor the next six steps of the ritual to suit your needs.
STEP 2: Cleanse

Similar to cleansing your skin at the beginning of a facial, step two isn’t the same as shampooing as it’s done on dry hair.
“Depending on the treatment that we've prescribed for the client we’ll choose a scalp cleansing product from Oway, Oribe or Davines,” Matilda explains.
“The products vary slightly, but they’re usually painted onto the scalp in sections and left on for 10 to 20 minutes.”
STEP 3: Steam

Next, your stylist will decide whether to intensify the treatment by adding steam.
“Steaming helps the treatment to penetrate into the hair and scalp,” Matilda says. “But if you have sensitive skin, anything that's going to raise the temperature and moisture level can cause more irritation. That's why we need to work out if it's right for that client.”
The portable steamer can be used in two ways, Paul explains: “You either put a cap over the head and push the steam into the cap while sitting at the section or you can do it while relaxing at the back wash.”
Following 10 to 20 minutes of steaming, the treatment is removed as per the product instructions, Matilda explains: “With some of them you dampen the hair and it emulsifies to become the shampoo, but some of them you rinse first and then shampoo.”
STEP 4: Massage

For the most relaxing part of the ritual, you’ll be treated to a head massage, your stylist choosing a pressure level that’s best suited to your scalp.
“If the client’s scalp is quite oily, I will do a more relaxed massage because I don’t want to stimulate oil production by doing a really strong massage,” Matilda says.
STEP 5: Treat

The treatment step, which can be done during or after the head massage, is intended to balance the scalp, so the product will usually have detoxifying, soothing or moisturising properties.
“There are additional scalp treatments we can add on with the massage. For example, Davines has a charcoal mask that goes on at that point,” Matilda says.
“Or we might use serum drops to help nourish the scalp. Oway has densifying drops that are great if you’re worried about hair loss. Kérastase has got their Nutritive range with leave-in drops for dry scalp and the Potentialiste drops which support the scalp microbiome.”
STEP 6: Blow dry

To create a goregously glossy finish, your stylist will finish the treatment with a blowout, being careful to preserve your freshly-cleansed scalp.
“It's about being conscious of how products might have built up in the hair before and what you want to achieve now,” Matilda says, which is why she chooses lightweight styling products such as Davines Oil Non Oil. “I also love the Volu blow-dry spray by Davines because it’s water-based.”
STEP 7: Analyse

Finally, your stylist will go back in with the tricho camera to see how the skin and follicles look post-treatment.
“Comparing before and after with photos you can see how the scalp has improved, and this is also when we’ll talk to the client about how to continue to look after their scalp at home,” Matilda says.
“That might include recommending a hair care routine, like not stimulating your scalp in certain way.”
In the case of persistent scalp problems, your stylist may recommend follow-up treatments or products to use at home.
“It's not always going to be a quick-fix,” says Paul. “With some of our treatments there's a program, so they may need to come in once a week for the next month or so, depending on the intensity of the problem.”
