Sculpted ponytails: 3 ways to wear the architectural up-do trend
Learn how to create sleek, chic hair-up styles.
For easy, everyday hair styling, nothing beats the humble low ponytail. But when you want to look pulled-together or get glammed up for a special occasion, it’s time to take your look to the next level.
Enter the sculpted ponytail, the statement 2026 hair trend that’s set to dominate this spring/summer season.
“During Milan fashion week recently, at the Gucci show, a lot of the models had very tight, shiny ponytails,” says Yoselita Pandolfo, director at Paul Edmonds London. “The shape was very clean.”
What exactly is a sculpted ponytail? “It's more put-together than a regular ponytail,” explains director Lizzie Hearn. “With a sculpted ponytail, you look professional. They’re great for special occasions, especially if you’re wearing an eye-catching outfit and you want your hair to be more minimalist.”
With structural silhouettes and a polished finish, these hair-up styles can be tailored to suit your face shape and hair type, Lizzie says. “You can completely change someone’s face shape with the height of a ponytail – whether it’s positioned low or high on the head.”
A glossy ponytail is also a great alternative if you want to focus on your hair health, something Lizzie has noticed with her clients recently. “People are leaning more towards ponytails because they've had years of having extensions, and they want to give their hair a break.”
Plus, a sculpted ponytail is a practical option for the warm days of summer. Here, Lizzie and Yoselita talk through three elegant sculpted ponytail looks and explain how a hairdresser can help you achieve your dream look…
1. THE HIGH GLOSS PONYTAIL
A fashion week favourite, the super-straight high gloss ponytail is pared back but ultra-glamorous.
“The high gloss snatched pony is perfect for someone who's going to a fancy event and is wearing a statement dress or outfit,” says Lizzie. “The simple ponytail with slicked-back shine works on pretty much everyone.”
If you have wavy or curly hair, you’ll need to start by blow drying and straightening it with a hydrating serum such as Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, Yoselita says. “Then you need to use either a wet gel or a wax at the roots to make sure the hair is completely sleek but not too sticky.”
After pulling the hair back into a tight high ponytail, take a small section from underneath to conceal the band, Lizzie says. “Spray the section liberally with hair spray, wrap it round and secure it with a bobby pin. Finish off with a shine spray to create that mirrored look, but leave the ponytail swishy and free flowing”
2. THE LOW ARCHITECTURAL PONYTAIL
A versatile look that works well on straight, wavy or textured hair, the low architectural ponytail sits at the nape of the neck and can be styled with a centre or side parting.
“It's a bit more of a relaxed look rather than sharp and sleek,” Lizzie says. “You can create volume by using Oway Hair Puff powder on the roots and tonging the ponytail to make it wavy.”
Starting with second-day hair (freshly washed hair doesn’t have enough grip), she recommends parting the hair, applying serum to the ends and tonging them with a medium barrel curling iron before tying the ponytail at the nape of the neck. “Depending on the client’s face shape, I might leave some loose bits down to frame the face, then add Sam McKnight Cool Girl spray to add texture.”
Yoselita is a big fan of Davines Sea Salt Spray for texturising ponytails. “It’s amazing for creating just a little bit more volume and movement.”
3. THE SECTIONED PONYTAIL
The sculptural version of the half-up-do, a sectioned ponytail is created by taking a top section of hair and tying it back, then adding the ends of this section to the main ponytail lower down.
“How you section it depends on the volume of the hair. If you have fine hair, the top section will be smaller, but if it’s thick, the sections can be more even,” Yoselita says.
The silhouette also depends on the client’s proportions, Lizzie says. “If someone wants a low ponytail, you can still create a snatched look to their face by using the upper section. You can play around with it to see what works.”
Oribe spray wax applied close to the roots is ideal for dividing the top section. Be sure to use an extra-thin hair tie that’s easy to cover with a small piece of hair wrapped around it, then wrap the main ponytail and finish with a spritz of hair spray to hold everything in place.
How a hairdresser can help with your sculpted ponytail

Sculpted ponytails may have a minimalist aesthetic, but they’re not always easy to get right, especially if you’re doing your own hair – and that’s how a hair stylist can help at a hair-up appointment in salon.
“A lot of people struggle with bumps in their hair when they’re doing a ponytail,” Lizzie says. “That's down to having the best products and equipment. It's really important to have a good brush and comb to slick the hair back. Also the hair stylist will know what height will suit your face shape. On yourself, it's quite hard to know how high to go.”
Plus, your ponytail is also going to last longer if it’s crafted by a professional, she continues. “Even with looser ponytails. They may look effortless, but they’ll be indestructible.” And you won’t have any visible hair ties or pins. “That’s the difference with a hairdresser doing a ponytail up-do: it elevates it.”
Can you use extensions to create a sculpted ponytail?
Wondering if your hair is too short or not thick enough to create a beautiful sculpted ponytail? Carefully placed hair extensions can create the length and volume you need.
“A lot of people with shorter hair think they can't have a ponytail, but you can make a ponytail look very natural with extensions,” Lizzie says. “I would put in a row or two of clip-ins, then the rest of the hair goes over the top, so they're secured underneath the pony.”
Yoselita says that weft or weave extensions usually won’t work for ponytails as they would be visible at the root, but “tape or bonded extensions are great, because you won't see them.”
