At Home Styling with Tongs

When choosing which tongs to use for which hairstyle, the shape of the barrel is very important. Different size barrels will give different looks of your curls from tight classic ringlets to relaxed waves. Barrels vary in size however the three most common styles include-

The straight-barrel- This is the classic style of curling tong provides a very classic curl look that is a completely even shape from root to tip. The straight barreled tong is a great all-rounder when it comes to curling locks. Straight barrels come in various sizes to create equal curls which are either tight or loose. A 6mm-20mm barrel gives a tighter curl, think the 80s look while a 20-32mm barrel provides a curl of a pretty standard size, one you would imagine and works well for many styling occasions. The larger straight barrel tongs 32mm+ give more of a soft curl/ glamour wave look.

To ensure your classic curl lasts prep your hair with Shu Uemura Kaze Wave Curl Foam. Apply a small amount to towel dried hair and dry as normal. Kaze wave gives your hair a flexible medium hold with texture and shine without a crunchy/ structured feel.

The Tapered barrel- This type of barrel is shaped like a thin cone, one end of the barrel is wider than the other end to create a tighter curl closer to the roots with a looser curl towards the mid-lengths and ends. This shape of the barrel is perfect if you are wanting to create a very natural look rather than an equally constructed curl.

To create this natural looking style at home, apply a small amount of Shu Uemura Blow Dry Beautifier and apply to damp hair. Rough dry and tonging with your tapered barrel for a natural/ blow dried look. The Shu Uemura Blow Dry Beautifier helps protect hair from heat, tames frizz and smooths the hair for a glam loose look.

The bubble barrel- This barrel has become more popular as using this type of wand provides a loose, very relaxed curl to creates a boho look with variation with added texture. The barrel is shaped like bubbles which allows the hair to fit within the gaps between each bubble. This shape of this barrel also makes creating beach waves easily giving an effortless look.

To create a defined beach wave using the bubble barrel, Shu Uemura Kengo Feather is the perfect styling product to keep the look in place while still maintaining softness and shine for an effortless style. To use, you can run a small amount through mid-lengths and ends on either towel-dried or dry hair, then style away with your bubble barrel tong.

At Home Styling Pin Curls

Pin curls originated in the 1930s as a way of adding glamour to looks after the great depression. Pin curls have continued to be at the forefront of fashion and used as one of the many popular styling techniques in salons and at home styling. Pin curls can be difficult to do on your own hair so the team of experts at Paul Edmonds London has put together their pin curl styling tips.

To create a curl, wrap the hair in sections around your fingers. The smaller the section, the tighter the curl (a larger section of wrapped hair will create a looser curl). Once your section of hair is wrapped, push the curled circle of hair against the gain of the hair, this will feel like you are pushing the hair in the opposite direction. Once the hair is placed like this, on top of your hair, place the clip to secure. You can also create waves with pin curls and this is done by securing the curl ringlet of hair further down the head (not on top and against the natural fall of the hair). Placing your pin curl on the side of the hair will create a loose wave rather than a tight curl.

The team at Paul Edmonds London prescribe the following products for achieving glamourous pin curls at home.

  1. Cleanse and condition the hair with Shu Uemura Muroto Volume shampoo, conditioner and treatment for volume and bounce.

2. Prep the hair with Shu Uemura Kaze Wave for hold

3. As with Shu Uemura, you can cocktail products as they can be used interchangeably. The team’s top tip for creating the perfect pin curl is to mix Shu Uemura Kengo Feather with Shu Uemura Essence Absolue. By doing this you are putting structure into the curl meaning it will shape, hold and last for longer.

At Home Styling with Rollers

Rollers are one of the most classic ways to achieve glamorous curls with volume at home. Think big bouncy blowout! There are many rollers available from heated rollers to traditional velcro feel ones that vary in size depending on the tightness of the curl. To use rollers at home, the team have put together a step by step guide on how to apply, set and go!

Step 1: It’s important that you cleanse the hair before styling. For ultimate blow dry bounce cleanse twice with Shu Uemura Muroto Volume shampoo containing Himalayan crystals give a weightless feel and fortify the hair fiber infusing essential minerals giving the hair long-lasting volume from root to tip.

Step 2: After your Shu Uemura cleanses and condition, comb the hair and once towel dried apply Shu Uemura Blow Dry Beautifier to mid-lengths and ends. Enriched with Ginkgo Biloba, the BB cream will protect the hair from blow-dry heat while ensuring your look lasts. Once the hair is prepped (towel dried and styling product applied) comb the hair into sections.

Step 3: To apply the rollers, blow dry each section with a round brush to smooth and roll or twist your sections of hair around each roller. When applying the roller make sure you have tension between the hair and roller and when rolling down, gently sway the hair and roller from side to side to secure tightly. Apply the rollers with clips evenly to the head in sections, your sections do not need to be too neat as this will create.

Step 5: Leave the rollers in to set. To do this, cool blast the placed rollers with your dryer and evenly spray with Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer hairspray. This is now the perfect time to apply your make up.

Step 6: Once you feel the rollers have had long enough to set, gently take out the rollers and run your fingers through the mid-lengths and ends. Refrain from brushing your hair and spray Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer again for hold and for extra volume, do this with your head upside down with hair falling forward.
